Perservering
Character attribute 1
Walt Disney is known for his Disney Channel and his theme parks, but what made him brilliant was his ability to persevere. He started off trying to be a commercial artist (an artist who draws posters, logos, and signs) only to be let go… twice, little did he know that would be the best thing that ever happened to him. He was recommended for a job at Kansas City filmmakers and he worked there for a long time.
First, Walt borrowed a camera from the studio and made his own cartoons at home in his garage at night and at Kansas City filmmakers by day. When he thought that he was good enough he saved for a 1st class ticket to Hollywood, he struggled to create a studio with his brother Roy and best friend U.B. Iwerks, this plunged him into thousands of dollars in debt. But he kept on trying. He finally got a contract for Alice in Wonderland, and that was enough to clear the debt but it wasn’t enough to live by. To keep above water Walt and his small team worked from 6:00AM to 8:00PM Monday through Saturday. This shows perseverance because even when times were tough Walt still managed to get by; not only working some of the time but all of the time trying to build his career.(Michael D. Cole 23-26)
Second, when Walt Disney started to do well he hired more people to deal with some of his artwork and painting the cels (what pictures are painted on for cartoons). His contract with Universal Studios and Wrinkler’s Pictures was slowly falling apart, which would cause him to lose the rights all of the characters he created during the contract. Meanwhile Charlie Mintz lured Walt’s overworked employees to Wrinkler’s Pictures and Universal Studios. Walt Disney was forced to prep for the end of the contract; he started secretly working behind locked doors at his studio with his brother Roy. This continued for weeks until Disney thought of a clumsy little mouse with big round ears, after days of debate they chose the name Mickey Mouse. Walt again showed perseverance by not giving up when his contract was ending and yet again coming up with another idea to save his works. (Michael D. Cole 39-42)
In Conclusion, through much trouble and debt Walt Disney proved that his brilliant imagination can persevere through difficult times.
